Fitness: It’s All About the Baby Steps

When it comes to health and wellness, it's easy to assume that achieving optimal fitness requires relentless hours at the gym and strict dietary regimens. However, my journey has taught me that sustainable progress is all about taking small, manageable steps rather than diving headfirst into extreme routines.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a gym rat who spends every waking hour pumping iron or sweating profusely. Unless I'm gearing up for a specific event, my daily routine consists of just 30 minutes to an hour of cardio and a few sessions of yoga each week. Of course, eating right plays a crucial role in my overall wellbeing, but it's the simple strategies I employ to combat sedentary habits that truly make a difference.

The key, I've found, is to avoid overwhelming yourself with unrealistic expectations. Waking up at the crack of dawn or sacrificing precious sleep to hit the gym is a recipe for burnout. Instead, I advocate for starting small and integrating movement into your daily routine, especially if you have a desk job like most of us do.

Here's a practical tip: set a timer to remind yourself to get up and move once every hour. It could be as simple as doing 10 of something: 10 pushups, 10 situps, 10 lunges, 10 squats, and holding a 30-second plank. These micro-workouts take less than a minute and add up to significant activity by the end of an 8-hour workday.

Don't worry if you're new to exercise; there are plenty of modifications to ease you into it. Start with wall pushups, gradually progressing to floor pushups. Use a chair or hold onto a stable surface for support during squats and lunges. And as you build strength and endurance, consider adding weights or increasing your repetitions. I like low weight with high repetitions. A 10 lb dumbell can kick my butt pretty easy 🤣

Our 4 legged friends. are always willing to help out however they can. Gibbs makes a nice 20 lb weight 😂

But it's not just about breaking a sweat; flexibility and mobility are equally vital components of a healthy lifestyle. Spend just five minutes stretching before you start your day and another five before you hit the sack. Trust me; your future self will thank you for it.

Now, don't expect miraculous transformations overnight. This approach might not shrink you back into your high school jeans, but it will set you on the right path toward long-term health and vitality.

And one final reminder: hydration is key! So, for the love of Pete, drink water—and lots of it!

He is a character ☺️. He usually jumps on my back to help with push ups too! I guess he felt like he had shown off enough 😆
